week 34 - Stars on sticks

Caught up on a bit of glazing this week - I hope some of it has been in the kiln because I am dying to see how they turned out!

I dipped these stars in glaze using barbque skewers because it is an easy way of holding onto the shapes in the glaze and also keeps the inside of the hole from getting coated, this is good for when you thread them on the wire and also means that they shouldn't get stuck to the wire after they have been fired. We are going to sell these along with some other ornaments we have made at the Christmas craft fair.

on the firing rack -

I also finished the rest of the leaves - these have a chrome green oxide on them and then I have dipped them in clear glaze, which looks very nice when I tried it on my test tile.

those are the dipping tongs in the middle!

And lastly I have a large bowl and some very delicate pinch pots that someone left at the studio. They were going to be thrown away so I wanted to take them and see if I could do something interesting with them!

I love this large bowl - I have glazed it in a sort of satin black glaze and I am hoping it will look good in my living room. The way it is made is really nice, if it turns out well I think I might have to make some more of these!

I would never have the patience to make these pinch pots, the edges are literally paper thin, but they would be good with salt or pepper in them. Or on your desk with paper clips inside...anyway I chose a variety of glazes and we will just see how they come out!

I think next week it is time to get back to 'making' and doing something for me - I have a few ideas that I am ready to get going with...watch this space (I know you already are)

Week 33 - Kids activites at Saltaire Festival

The preparation has taken a lot of time and hard work but it was worth it on the day! The fundraising team ran 2 free kids activities: Fabric Cupcakes and the Large Knitting Nancy.

It made a lovely addition to the children's area of Saltaire Festival and was extremely successful considering that we had a rainy morning and didn't have many visitors on the stall until about 1pm when the sun came out!

We also had Cupcake Craft Packs for sale and we sold 40 of these so we did a bit of fundraising for Kirkgate Studios & Workshops on the day as well!!

All in all it was a great day and volunteers and participants really enjoyed themselves!
The following day our Woodworks tutor John was on the stall with his 'bug houses' which were also very popular!! John will be out again next Saturday & Sunday so come and see our stall!!

week 32 - Fabric Cupcakes and Knitting Nancy's

I have been working towards a small fundraising event that we are holding at Saltaire Festival next weekend on behalf of KS&W. We have a stall of free children's activities (enter the Fabric Cupcakes & a huge Knitting Nancy) and along side these we will be selling 'Craft packs' for £1 in an effort to raise a bit of money for KS&W (and use up the oodles of fabric that we had donated to use this year!)

Some examples of the Fabric Cupcakes.

We ran a similar event earlier this year and it was extremely popular! Even little boys got involved. The craft packs we have made have everything inside you need to make one of these (minus needle and thread and glue) and we hope people will buy one to take home or give as a gift.

Our LARGE Knitting Nancy - usually these are hand sized ones or made from an old wooden bobbin and a few nails. Sometimes it is called 'french knitting' ? We made ours big so we can use fabric strips as 'yarn' and then weave it together to make one long massive cord...it should look cool! We have normal hand held versions of these that our woodworking team made to sell as well. (no photos of these yet)

A few fabric balls...

The nice bernina sewing machine at KS&W...it made me miss my sewing machine in the states :(

Me hard at work - you sew the fabric into tubes and then you can cut it into strips much more quickly.

I will post photos of our stall and the kiddies hard at work next Saturday!
